*English Bulldog*

*The English Bulldog breed is a medium-sized breed of dog, and with its pushed-in nose, wrinkled and worried-looking forehead, and droopy jowls give it a look of tough, aggressive disapproval. This breed stands only about 10 inches tall, but is extremely broad, with muscular shoulders, thick neck, powerful jaws and a broad stance. Historically, the English used Bulldogs for the "sport" of bull baiting: hence the name. The dog's job was to sink its teeth into the nose or an appendage of the bull, driving the staked bull into a mad frenzy. This made it necessary for the dogs to be extremely ferocious, savage animals that reacted to pain by clamping on even more tightly and, if thrown, by getting up and attacking again. This cruel entertainment was outlawed in England in 1835 along with dogfighting. Since then breeders have tried to "select out" this aggressive stubbornness
